Run
by Singers Summer School in Assisi
This summer, the popular Run by
Singers Assisi Summer School will be directed once again by Jeremy Jackman.
Perched on a hilltop overlooking the plains of Umbria, Assisi, the city of
Giotto and St Francis, is a
place of picturesque alleyways, steps, churches, bells and pilgrims. Now in its fifth year, the course runs from Sunday evening, when we meet
for some introductions and an informal supper, to the following Saturday evening
where we perform our new repertoire at a concert in the Basilica of St Francis.Jeremy has again produced a programme of diverse eras, moods and styles
designed to keep us happy through the week and which will sound splendid in the
superb surroundings of the Basilica.
Palestrina’s glorious
motet and mass ‘Veni Sponsa Christi’ might have been written specially for
such an acoustic. It will be preceded by an extraordinary piece – neither
motet nor madrigal – written for a ducal wedding by the naturalised Italian de
Wert. As part of the concert we will again produce our British calling card for
the Italian audience by singing a group of home-grown pieces ranging from the
16th century to the present day.

Bach Cantatas at Benslow Music Trust
Bach wrote over 300 cantatas in his lifetime of which around half have survived
today. This new course, directed by Jeremy Jackman and Deborah Young at Benslow
in Hitchin, Hertfordshire offers the opportunity to explore some of them -
Jeremy has chosen numbers 46 and 127. Singers may have the chance to sing the
solo parts. The orchestra is for modern instruments (A=440) - the
instrumentation is oboe, bassoon, strings and harpsichord. The course concludes
on the day of Benslow's AGM, and the two cantatas will be performed as a concert
for Benslow's Trustees, Board of Management and their guests on the Sunday
afternoon.
